Unita (National Union for the Total Independence of Angola)

UNITA (National Union for the Total Independence of Angola) is a political organization that was originally a rebel group fighting for Angola's independence from Portuguese colonial rule, which it achieved in 1975. Later, UNITA became a major opposition party advocating for democracy and political change within Angola. During the 1970s and 1980s, it was involved in a long and violent civil war against the ruling MPLA government. Since the ceasefire in 2002, UNITA has transitioned into an active political party, participating in elections and functioning as an important voice in Angola’s political landscape.
