Uniform Bar Exam jurisdictions
The Uniform Bar Exam (UBE) is a standardized test used by some U.S. jurisdictions to assess foundational legal skills. Jurisdictions that adopt the UBE agree to use the same exam components—typically multiple-choice questions, essays, and practical tasks—making it easier for lawyers to practice across states. Passing the UBE allows for a portability of licensure, meaning an attorney can transfer their scores to other UBE jurisdictions without retaking the entire exam. Not all states participate; those that do include, for example, New York, California, and Illinois. Each jurisdiction maintains its own admission requirements alongside the UBE.
