Unidad Popular Coalition
The Unidad Popular Coalition was a political alliance in Chile, led by socialist president Salvador Allende from 1970 to 1973. It brought together various leftist and socialist parties aiming to implement social reforms, improve working and living conditions, and promote national ownership of resources. The coalition sought to move Chile toward a more equitable society through peaceful democratic processes. Its tenure ended with a military coup in 1973, which overthrew Allende’s government, leading to a period of dictatorship. The Unidad Popular remains a significant part of Chile’s political history, symbolizing efforts at socialist reform and popular democracy.
