UNESCO World Heritage Sites are places of special cultural or natural significance recognized internationally for their importance and protected for future generations. Hatra and Samarra are Iraq’s notable sites. Hatra, dating from the 2nd century BC, is an ancient fortified city with impressive walls and temples, showcasing early Islamic and pre-Islamic architecture. Samarra, from the 9th century, was an influential Abbasid capital known for its grand mosque with a spiraling minaret, reflecting medieval Islamic art and urban planning.
