Underwater Demolition Teams
Underwater Demolition Teams (UDTs) were specialized military units trained to operate under water and conduct covert missions. Their tasks included explosives expertise, clearing obstacles, reconnaissance, and sabotage of enemy installations, often prior to larger amphibious assaults. They played a crucial role during World War II and the Korean War, paving the way for successful landings by removing hazards on beaches and harbor entrances. UDTs were highly skilled in swimming, diving, and demolition, and their work contributed significantly to the success of amphibious operations. They are considered the precursors to the modern Navy SEALs.
