Underrepresentation

Underrepresentation occurs when a group’s presence or participation in a particular area—such as jobs, education, or decision-making—is significantly lower than their proportion in the general population. This creates disparities, meaning that the experiences, perspectives, and needs of that group may not be adequately reflected or addressed. Underrepresentation can result from historical barriers, bias, or systemic inequality, limiting opportunities for certain groups to succeed or contribute equally. Recognizing underrepresentation helps identify areas where more inclusive efforts are needed to promote fairness, diversity, and equal access.
