Unciate Script

Unciate script, also known as Cherokee syllabary, is a writing system created by Sequoyah in the early 19th century for the Cherokee language. Instead of individual characters representing sounds like in alphabetic systems, it uses symbols called syllabograms that each represent a syllable—a unit of pronunciation made up of a consonant and a vowel. This system made reading and writing accessible for Cherokee speakers, improving literacy and cultural preservation. Unciate script is distinctive and visually elegant, serving as an important cultural achievement that helped ensure the Cherokee language could be taught and maintained in written form.
