Umpqua people

The Umpqua people are a Native American tribe originally from the southwestern Oregon coast and inland areas. Traditionally, they were hunter-fisher-gatherers, relying on salmon, shellfish, acorns, and other local resources. They lived in semi-permanent villages and had distinct languages and cultural practices. Today, some Umpqua descendants continue to preserve their heritage through cultural events, language revitalization, and tribal sovereignty efforts. Their history is marked by adaptations to changing environments and contact with European settlers, but they remain an important part of Oregon's Indigenous history and cultural landscape.
