Umbilical cord

The umbilical cord is a flexible, rope-like structure that connects a developing fetus to the mother's placenta during pregnancy. It acts as a lifeline, delivering oxygen and nutrients from the mother to the baby and carrying waste products away. Usually about 50-60 centimeters long, it contains blood vessels surrounded by a gel-like substance, protecting them from pressure. After birth, the cord is clamped and cut, leaving behind the navel. Its proper development is essential for healthy fetal growth and development.
