U.S.-Taliban negotiations
U.S.-Taliban negotiations primarily aimed to end the long-running conflict in Afghanistan. Initiated in 2018, these talks focused on the U.S. withdrawing its troops in exchange for the Taliban's commitment to preventing terrorist groups from using Afghan soil to plan attacks. The discussions sought a peaceful resolution and a political framework for Afghanistan's future. In February 2020, a deal was struck, leading to the U.S. withdrawal in August 2021, but concerns arose about the Taliban’s governance and human rights issues following their return to power.
