U.S. Land Office
The U.S. Land Office was a government agency established in the early 19th century to manage the sale and distribution of public lands acquired by the United States. Its primary role was to oversee the surveying, sale, and settlement of these lands, particularly in the West, as the nation expanded. This helped regulate land ownership and promote settlement during westward expansion. The office facilitated the transfer of vast tracts of land to private individuals and companies, contributing to the development of agriculture and infrastructure in the country. Over time, its responsibilities were absorbed by the Bureau of Land Management.
