Typhoon Mangkhut, also known as Ompong in the Philippines, was a powerful and destructive tropical cyclone that formed in September 2018. It originated in the western Pacific Ocean and intensified rapidly, reaching maximum sustained winds of around 165 mph. The typhoon caused widespread damage across the Philippines, Hong Kong, and southern China, bringing heavy rains, strong winds, flooding, and landslides. It resulted in numerous fatalities, injuries, and significant infrastructure damage. Mangkhut highlighted the importance of early warning systems and preparedness in mitigating the impacts of such intense natural storms.
