Type 2 (HSV-2)

Type 2 herpes simplex virus (HSV-2) is a common viral infection primarily responsible for genital herpes. It is transmitted through close skin-to-skin contact, often during sexual activity. After initial infection, the virus remains dormant in the nerve cells and can reactivate, causing outbreaks of painful sores or blisters in the genital or anal area. Many people may experience mild symptoms or none at all. While there’s no cure, antiviral medications can help manage outbreaks and reduce transmission risk. It is a lifelong condition, but with proper management, many individuals live healthy, normal lives.
