Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome
Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) is a condition that occurs in identical twins sharing a placenta with abnormal blood vessel connections. These connections cause an uneven blood flow: one twin (the donor) supplies blood to the other twin (the recipient). As a result, the donor twin may become undernourished, with poor growth and reduced amniotic fluid, while the recipient twin can experience excessive blood volume, leading to swelling and potential heart problems. TTTS requires careful monitoring and often medical intervention to balance blood flow and improve outcomes for both twins.
