Turkish Reform Movement

The Turkish Reform Movement, also known as the Tanzimat, was a series of reforms in the Ottoman Empire during the mid-19th century aimed at modernizing the state. Initiated to strengthen the empire amid internal decline and external pressure, these reforms included legal and administrative restructuring, promotion of education, and efforts to grant more rights to citizens regardless of religion. The movement sought to modernize Ottoman institutions to compete with European powers, reduce corruption, and stabilize the empire, laying groundwork for future modernization efforts and the eventual transition toward a more modern nation-state.
