Tupaia

Tupaia was a Polynesian navigator and skilled at reading the stars, ocean currents, and weather patterns to sail across the Pacific Ocean. Born on the island of Raʻiātea (near Tahiti), he played a crucial role in early European exploration of the region. In 1769, he accompanied British explorer Captain James Cook on his voyages, providing valuable knowledge of navigation and local cultures. Tupaia’s understanding of the seas and his ability to communicate with different Polynesian groups helped bridge cultural gaps, making him an important figure in the history of Polynesian navigation and European exploration.
