Tunguska Expeditions
The Tunguska Expeditions refers to scientific efforts to investigate the 1908 explosion over Siberia's Tunguska region, caused by a meteoroid or comet approximately 50-60 meters across. The blast flattened about 2,000 square kilometers of forest, releasing energy equivalent to 10-15 megatons of TNT. Expeditions collected data on the impact site, analyzed tree fall patterns, and studied atmospheric effects to understand the event’s cause and potential threat of cosmic impacts. These studies advanced knowledge of near-Earth objects, impact hazards, and the Earth's atmosphere, significantly contributing to planetary defense research.
