Tumor Lysis Syndrome
Tumor Lysis Syndrome (TLS) occurs when a large number of cancer cells break down rapidly, releasing their internal contents into the bloodstream. This sudden release causes significant imbalances in minerals and waste products, such as potassium, phosphate, and uric acid. These changes can lead to serious complications like kidney failure, irregular heart rhythms, and seizures. TLS most often happens after cancer treatments that quickly destroy tumor cells, especially in cancers with high cell turnover. Prompt medical management is essential to prevent or treat these potentially life-threatening effects.
