Tuberculosis (TB) vaccines help protect against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacteria causing TB. The most common vaccine, the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG), is made from a weakened form of the bacteria and is usually given to children in countries where TB is common. It provides protection mainly against severe childhood TB but is less effective in preventing adult lung TB. Researchers are developing new vaccines to improve immunity across different age groups and better control TB worldwide. Vaccination, along with screening and treatment, remains essential in controlling the spread of tuberculosis.
