Tsutomu Yamaguchi
Tsutomu Yamaguchi was a Japanese man who uniquely survived both atomic bombings during World War II. He was in Hiroshima when the first bomb exploded on August 6, 1945, and experienced severe injuries but survived. Then, he traveled to Nagasaki, where the second bomb dropped on August 9, 1945, and he was again close to the blast zone, sustaining injuries. Remarkably, Yamaguchi recovered from both experiences and lived for decades afterward. His story highlights human resilience and the tragic impact of nuclear weapons. In 2009, he was officially recognized as a “nijū hibaku,” a person wounded by both bombings.
