Tsavo Lions

The Tsavo Lions refer to a group of maneless lions that famously attacked workers on the Kenya-Uganda railway in 1898-1899. Over several months, these lions killed many laborers, causing widespread fear and halting construction. Investigations suggested the lions’ unusual behavior might have been influenced by food shortages or disturbance. Eventually, they were killed by the railway’s senior staff to stop the attacks, after which their remains gained fame. The Tsavo Lions are studied for insights into animal behavior, human-wildlife conflicts, and the impact of environmental stressors on predators.
