True Vocal Folds

The true vocal folds, also known as vocal cords, are two bands of tissue located in the larynx (voice box). They are essential for producing sound by vibrating as air from the lungs passes through them during speech or singing. When you speak or sing, the vocal folds come together and vibrate at different speeds, creating sound waves that are shaped by your mouth and throat. Their movement and tension determine pitch and volume. Healthy vocal folds are flexible and elastic, allowing for clear voice production, while issues like swelling or nodules can affect voice quality.
