The tropical rainforest has distinct layers that support its rich biodiversity. The emergent layer is the tallest trees that rise above all others, receiving the most sunlight. Beneath it is the canopy, a dense layer of interconnected trees forming a roof over the forest, home to many animals and plants. Below the canopy is the undergrowth or understory, with smaller trees and shrubs, where light is limited. Finally, the forest floor is a dark, nutrient-rich space where decomposition occurs, supporting fungi, insects, and larger animals. Each layer plays a vital role in the rainforest’s complex ecosystem.
