Treaty tribes

Treaty tribes are Indigenous groups that entered into formal agreements, known as treaties, with the government, often in the 18th to 20th centuries. These treaties establish mutual rights, responsibilities, and boundaries, recognizing the tribes’ sovereignty and land rights while also defining land use and resource sharing. They are legally binding and serve as foundational documents that acknowledge the tribes’ traditional territories and cultural heritage. The treaties aim to foster coexistence, cooperation, and respect between Indigenous nations and the government, ensuring rights and protections for Indigenous peoples both historically and into the future.
