Treaty of Moultrie Creek

The Treaty of Moultrie Creek, signed in 1823, was an agreement between the United States and several Native American tribes, primarily the Seminoles. It called for the tribes to relocate from Florida's eastern region to a designated reservation area in the interior of Florida, near Lake Moultrie. The U.S. aimed to consolidate tribes to exert greater control and promote settlement. In exchange, tribes received some protection, supplies, and promises of independence. However, disagreements and conflicts continued afterward, leading to further tensions and subsequent treaties. The treaty marked a significant step in the U.S. efforts to remove Native tribes from their traditional lands.
