Treaty of Alfred and Guthrum

The Treaty of Alfred and Guthrum was an agreement made around 886 AD between King Alfred of Wessex and the Viking leader Guthrum. It ended recent Viking invasions in southern England and established boundaries between their territories. The treaty allowed Guthrum and his followers to settle in East Anglia, with the land confirmed as their own, while Alfred maintained control of Wessex. It also included provisions for peaceful cooperation and secure borders, helping to bring stability after years of conflict. This agreement was a key step toward the eventual reconsolidation of English regions under a more unified rule.
