Treaty 1
Treaty 1 is an agreement made in 1871 between the Canadian government and several First Nations in what is now southern Manitoba. It was intended to facilitate peaceful settlement and development of the land, while allowing First Nations to maintain certain rights, such as hunting and land use. In exchange, the First Nations received promises of reserves (land set aside for them), annual payments, and supplies. The treaty aimed to establish coexistence but has since been the subject of ongoing discussions about treaty rights, land use, and government responsibilities.
