Transleithania

Transleithania refers to the western part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, specifically the territories that were governed directly from Vienna, Austria. The term contrasts with "Croatia-Slavonia," which was governed from Budapest, Hungary. Transleithania encompassed regions like Austria, Bohemia, and parts of present-day Slovakia and Slovenia, and it was characterized by diverse cultures, languages, and ethnic groups. The term often highlights the administrative divisions and the complexity of governance within the multi-ethnic empire during its existence from 1867 until its dissolution after World War I in 1918.
