Transgender people are individuals whose gender identity—their deeply felt sense of being male, female, or something else—differs from the sex they were assigned at birth based on physical characteristics. For example, a person assigned female at birth may identify and live as a man, or vice versa. Being transgender is a matter of gender identity, not sexual orientation. Many transgender people choose to transition through social changes, medical treatments, or both to align their outer lives with their inner sense of self. Respect and understanding of transgender identities promote inclusivity and support individuals’ well-being.
