Transfusion-transmitted Infections

Transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) refer to diseases that can be spread through blood transfusions. When someone receives blood from a donor, there is a risk that infectious agents, like viruses and bacteria, may be present in the donated blood. Common infections include HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. To reduce this risk, blood banks screen donated blood for these infections before it is transfused. Despite advanced testing, the possibility of TTIs cannot be completely eliminated, making awareness and ongoing safety practices essential in ensuring the health of patients receiving blood transfusions.
