Transfusion-transmitted Diseases

Transfusion-transmitted diseases (TTDs) are infections that can be passed from one person to another through a blood transfusion. When someone receives donated blood, there’s a risk of exposure to viruses, bacteria, or parasites if the blood isn’t properly screened. Common TTDs include hepatitis B and C, HIV, and West Nile virus. Blood donation centers follow strict testing protocols to minimize these risks, ensuring that donated blood is safe for recipients. Despite advancements in screening, there is still a very small chance of TTDs occurring, which is why ongoing research and monitoring are essential.
