Transept

A transept is a part of many Christian church buildings that forms a cross shape. It runs perpendicular to the main body of the church (the nave), creating arms that extend to the sides. This design allows for additional space, often for chapels or altars, and helps emphasize the church’s cross-like floor plan. The transept typically intersects the nave near the front of the church, giving the building its cruciform (cross-shaped) appearance. It also facilitates processions and gatherings, enhancing both the structure’s function and its symbolic representation of the Christian cross.
