traditional quilting techniques

Traditional quilting involves sewing together layers of fabric to create a warm, decorative textile. Typically, quilters arrange fabric pieces—called patches—into patterns, then stitch them to a backing fabric with padding or batting in between. The stitching, known as quilting, can follow intricate designs or simple lines, often enhancing the pattern’s visual appeal. Techniques include patchwork, appliqué (adding fabric shapes onto a background), trapunto (stuffed quilting for dimension), and hand or machine stitching. Quilting preserves the fabric layers and adds texture, resulting in functional art pieces like bed covers, wall hangings, and heirlooms.
