Traditional Assamese Theatre
Traditional Assamese theatre, also known as "Ankiya Naat" and "Bhaona," is a classical art form that originated in Assam, India. It combines storytelling, music, dance, and devotional themes, often based on stories from Hindu epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Usually performed by groups of artists called "Sutradhars," these performances are both theatrical and spiritual, aiming to entertain and impart moral lessons. Historically, they were performed in village temples and are characterized by their minimalist stage, expressive acting, and rich cultural significance, preserving Assam’s heritage and religious traditions through performance arts.
