Toxic Waste and Race Study
The Toxic Waste and Race Study, conducted in 1987 by the United Church of Christ, examined the relationship between hazardous waste facilities and race across the United States. It revealed that communities of color, particularly African American and Latino neighborhoods, were disproportionately located near these toxic waste sites. This study highlighted environmental justice issues, showing how race and economic status influence exposure to environmental hazards. It played a crucial role in raising awareness about the need for fair treatment and involvement of all communities in environmental decision-making processes.
