Towers of Silence
The Towers of Silence are structures used in Zoroastrian tradition for funeral rituals. After death, the body is placed on an open-topped tower to be exposed to the elements and scavenging birds, primarily vultures, which facilitate natural decomposition. This method is meant to avoid contaminating the earth or fire, considered sacred in Zoroastrian faith. The process allows the body to be purified through natural elements, reflecting the religion's emphasis on cleanliness and respect for nature. These towers are typically located on elevated ground and are culturally significant for ensuring respectful and environmentally conscious disposal of the deceased.
