Tononi’s Integrated Information Theory

Tononi’s Integrated Information Theory (IIT) suggests that consciousness arises from how different parts of a system are interconnected and share information. It posits that a conscious experience corresponds to the amount of integrated information (called Phi) the system contains. Higher Phi means the system’s parts are highly interconnected, producing unified experiences. Essentially, IIT measures how much the whole system’s information is more than just the sum of its parts, emphasizing that consciousness depends on the system’s capacity to integrate information, not just on its complexity or size.
