Tonal language
A tonal language uses pitch variations, called tones, to distinguish word meaning. Unlike in non-tonal languages where pitch mainly expresses emotion or emphasis, tones are integral to communication, with different pitch patterns changing a word’s meaning entirely. For example, in Mandarin Chinese, the syllable "ma" can mean mother, horse, scold, or vulgar insult, depending on its tone. These languages require speakers to not only learn vocabulary and grammar but also master pitch patterns. Tone is fundamental and must be properly produced and understood for clear communication. Examples include Mandarin, Cantonese, Thai, and Yoruba.
