The Tomb of Askia is an impressive historical site located in Gao, Mali, built in the late 15th century for Askia Mohammed I, a powerful ruler of the Songhai Empire. It’s considered one of West Africa’s greatest architectural achievements, made primarily from mudbrick and featuring a tall, pyramid-like structure with a spiral staircase. The tomb served as Askia’s final resting place and symbolized his authority and the empire’s greatness. Today, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering insight into the region’s rich history, culture, and Islamic influence.
