Tokyo firebombing

The Tokyo firebombing occurred during World War II, primarily in March 1945, when Allied forces, mainly the United States, conducted extensive aerial bombing raids on Tokyo. Using incendiary bombs, they targeted the city’s industrial and military infrastructure, but also caused massive destruction and loss of civilian life. The intense fires created firestorms, consuming large parts of the city and reducing many neighborhoods to ruins. This bombing campaign aimed to weaken Japan’s war effort but resulted in significant civilian suffering, with tens of thousands of deaths and widespread devastation, shaping the destructive power of modern urban warfare.
