Tohoku Tsunami
The Tohoku Tsunami occurred on March 11, 2011, triggered by a powerful earthquake off Japan’s northeastern coast. The quake, measuring magnitude 9.0, caused the seafloor to suddenly shift, displacing a vast amount of water and generating a massive tsunami. Waves reached heights up to 40 meters (131 feet), flooding coastal communities, damaging infrastructure, and causing widespread loss of life. The disaster also led to nuclear accidents at the Fukushima Daiichi plant. This event highlighted the destructive power of undersea earthquakes and tsunamis, prompting improvements in early warning systems and disaster preparedness worldwide.
