Tithes War

The Tithe War (1838–1850) was a protest in Ireland against the government’s attempt to enforce a mandatory tax called tithes, which primarily funded the Anglican Church of Ireland, seen as unfair by mostly Catholic farmers and local communities. Many refused to pay, leading to protests and civil disobedience that challenged the authority of the state and church. The conflict highlighted tensions between religious and national identities, and over time, Ireland sought to reduce the impact of tithes, eventually leading to their abolition.
