Tithe War
The Tithe War was an Irish resistance movement during the 1830s and 1840s against the compulsory payment of tithes to the Anglican Church of Ireland, which was predominantly supported by the largely Catholic population. Many Irish Catholics and dissenters viewed these payments as unfair and unjust, as they funded a church they did not belong to. The conflict involved protests, civil disobedience, and some violence, aiming to reduce or eliminate the tithes. The war ultimately contributed to land reforms and changes in church-state relations in Ireland, reflecting broader struggles over national identity and religious autonomy.
