Timucua Culture

The Timucua were a group of Indigenous peoples who lived in what is now northern Florida and southeastern Georgia. They thrived before European contact, practicing agriculture, fishing, and hunting. Their society was organized into villages led by chiefs, and they built distinctive shell middens and ceremonial centers. The Timucua had a complex spiritual life, with rituals and a rich oral tradition. European contact introduced diseases and colonization, which greatly diminished their population and culture. Today, their descendants and historical records help us understand and honor their legacy.
