Timucua
The Timucua were a group of Native American peoples who lived in what is now northern Florida and southeastern Georgia before European contact. They had complex societies with distinct languages, social structures, and spiritual beliefs. The Timucua engaged in hunting, fishing, and agriculture, growing crops like maize, beans, and squash. European explorers and settlers, arriving in the 16th century, greatly impacted their populations through conflict, disease, and colonization. Today, the Timucua no longer exist as a distinct tribe, but their history remains important in understanding the region's indigenous heritage.
