Timbs v. Indiana
Timbs v. Indiana is a 2019 U.S. Supreme Court case that determined the Eighth Amendment's ban on excessive fines applies to state governments. Tyson Timbs' vehicle, worth $42,000, was seized by Indiana after he was convicted of a crime, even though the maximum monetary fine for his offense was much lower. The Court ruled that the government cannot impose fines that are excessively large compared to the severity of the crime and that this protection applies to both federal and state actions through the incorporation of the Eighth Amendment's protections.
