Timar

A "tímar" (or "timar") was a type of land grant used in the Ottoman Empire, where the government allocated land or the income from certain lands to military officers or officials. In exchange, these holders, known as "timarholders," provided military service and administration. The system aimed to support the army financially without direct payments, relying instead on land revenues. Over time, it became an essential part of Ottoman governance, linking land ownership with military and bureaucratic duties, functioning somewhat like a modern reward or incentive system for loyalty and service within the empire.
