Tigray People's Liberation Front

The Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) is a political organization in Ethiopia that originated as a rebel group seeking regional self-determination for Tigray, a northern Ethiopian region. Founded in the 1970s, it played a major role in ending Ethiopia’s Derg dictatorship by leading a coalition that overthrew it in 1991. The TPLF then became the dominant party in the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), governing Ethiopia for over two decades. In recent years, tensions between the TPLF and the federal government escalated into conflict in Tigray, leading to violence, displacement, and a complex political crisis.
