Tidal waves, more accurately called tsunamis, are large ocean waves caused primarily by underwater disturbances such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or landslides. These events displace a massive volume of water, creating waves that travel across the ocean at high speeds. When these waves reach shallow coastal areas, they slow down and grow taller, resulting in a powerful, destructive surge of water that can flood vast areas and cause significant damage. Unlike regular waves caused by wind, tsunamis involve the movement of the entire water column, making them capable of incredible force and height.
