Thurgood Marshall was a pioneering American jurist and civil rights advocate, best known as the first African American Supreme Court Justice. Before his appointment, he was a lawyer who fought tirelessly against racial segregation and discrimination, most notably winning the landmark 1954 case Brown v. Board of Education, which challenged school segregation. As a Supreme Court Justice from 1967 to 1991, he used his position to uphold justice and equality, shaping important legal decisions that advanced civil rights and social justice in the United States.
